Many of the Sun Resorts hotels have become household names, with some of them being firm favourites for repeat customers that visit the hotels year after year. While the group’s primary focus is to ensure that guests have the luxury tropical holidays of their dreams, Sun Limited pride themselves on being so much more than your ordinary hotel group. An intrinsic part of the Sun Resorts vision is to be part of meaningful projects that positively impact the world and all those that live in it.
This led to the implementation of more sustainable initiatives and hotel practices at each of the Sun Resorts hotels, but it also led to the inception of SUNCARE, the brand under which Sun Limited’s charitable efforts now fall. At the core of SUNCARE lies three main pillars; Community Engagement, Environment, and Sustainable Business Values.
Here’s what you need to know about SUNCARE, the people behind the initiatives and the incredible upcoming SUNCARE Charity Golf Competition:
SUNCARE was sparked by a tragic event
The idea for SUNCARE came about started after the son of one of the Sun Resorts employees was diagnosed with cancer. The employee needed a lot of money for the treatment which was difficult to raise. Sadly, his son passed away. The Sun Resorts management was moved greatly by this and wanted to mark the memory of the little boy by investing the money that had been raised before he passed, in the Children’s Cancer Centre, the only one of its kind in Mauritius, which was in a deplorable and dilapidated state. Some 10 million Mauritian Rupees was raised and used to modernise and better equip the centre, not only to upgrade the facilities but to make it a more pleasant environment for its special little patients.
There are some hugely dedicated people behind SUNCARE
SUNCARE started out as a wonderful idea, but one that needed a lot of work and even more passion, and in 2016, Sun Resorts found the perfect person to spearhead the organisation, Ali Abdool, Sun Resorts’ very own Sustainability Specialist. In the years since Ali has forged ahead with incredible determination and passion, but it’s been an incredibly challenging journey. Because Sun Resorts already had a strong relationship with the Children's Cancer Centre, and because it’s a cause that moves a lot of people, it was natural for him to work on and maintain this relationship and put a lot of effort into improving the centre. With his tireless work, SUNCARE and Sun Limited have now adopted the Children’s Cancer Ward at the Victoria hospital which now as 14 beds and where 120 children are undergoing treatment. The frightening part for Ali is that the number of patients seems to grow each year, which brings the challenge of raising more funds for the children. In his efforts to do so, Ali has put together numerous activations and fundraising events, but the concern is that these efforts have still not raised enough money for the ward.
Ali has inspired other Sun Resorts employees to do more
Ali’s unwavering efforts and commitment have inspired other Sun Resorts employees to help him raise the necessary funds and add to his charitable cause in the name of the children with cancer. Then they started a raffle with incredible prizes from the hotels in the Sun Resorts Group and Priscilla Guranna the Golf Sales and Marketing Manager for Sun Resorts came up with the idea of hosting a charity golf competition, where all of the fees collected will be donated to SUNCARE’s programmes.
It’s little wonder that the Sun Resorts employees are known to be “People at heart” who believe in teamwork to achieve greatness, not only in business but on a much larger scale that considers the local communities, children and the natural environment.
The upcoming SUNCARE Charity Golf Competition is not to be missed
2019 marks the 3rd edition of the SUNCARE Charity Golf Competition, and this year, it’s one not to be missed, especially because it will be played on one of the world’s finest courses - the dazzling Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club - and there are some sublime prizes up for grabs offered by the Sun Resorts hotels and those under Sun Limited’s management, such as Four Seasons, Anahita and Shangri-La.
The competition which will be held on 28 September 2019, will be played in teams of 4, with rounds played in a scramble format. It will start with a phenomenal breakfast at Langer’s Bar overlooking the incredible 18th hole of Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club, designed by the fabled Bernhard Langer himself, after which, at 09:00 the competition will officially kick off. Some 80 players are expected to participate in the competition which will include a number of exciting stages; Drive out Cancer (Longest Drive - Men), Swing for Hope (Longest Drive – Ladies) and Putt for Cure (Nearest to the Pin – Mix).
Players are encouraged to dress with a touch of pink to mark the support for those with cancer and the day is sure to be enjoyed with a fabulous ambience and a wonderful objective. The competition will then be followed by an extraordinary lunch buffet on the exclusive golfer's beach (weather permitting) or at the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club Clubhouse, which will be followed by a prize giving. The amount collected from the event and that will be donated to
SUNCARE will be announced during the lunch.
It’s sure to be an exciting and unmissable event, with well-known business people and popular influencers taking part to show their support for the children. As Priscilla Guranna so aptly said, “No one is indifferent to the suffering of children. If we join hands, even on a small scale, each of us can contribute to improving the lives of the children affected as well as their families during this difficult time. The organization of a charity golf tournament was obvious given that Sun Resorts is involved in the golf sector and manage one of the best golf courses. Gathering caring people around their common passion makes a huge difference in brightening the lives of these children”.
The funds have a very important purpose
Each participant fee will cover the sublime prize giving lunch, entry to the competition itself and a donation to SUNCARE.
All of the funds collected from the SUNCARE Charity Golf Competition will go towards:
- Continued improvements at the Children’s Cancer Ward at the Victoria Hospital in Candos.
- Providing additional medical treatment for the children in the ward
- Assisting with non-medical support for the children’s psychological welfare and educational support,
- Assisting with the social integration of the children in the local community.
- Helping families that need to send their children for additional treatment abroad.
