Highly-skilled and extremely dedicated to their work, the staff at Sugar Beach do their utmost to exceed all of their guests’ expectations. Much like Head Beach Waiter Fazle Bissessur, who has been in the industry for 14 years. We spoke to him about his work at Sugar Beach and this is what he had to say:
Why did you choose a job in the hospitality industry?
I am very passionate about my job. Before starting my job as a waiter, I was always fascinated by the tourism industry. This fascination grew as I paged through travel magazines. I wanted to know more about it and so I applied for a position. The job is incredibly rewarding and I love the environment of the hotel, which was a huge motivating factor for me to stay.
What about your hotel makes you excited about working there?
I just love the people, everyone from the guests to the other staff members and our excellent management team.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
I start work at 8 am, which is when I do my daily inspection of the beach. I then have my breakfast after which I do my other daily tasks which include getting feedback from guests, ensuring that everything is running smoothly and making sure the guests are at ease.
I then have my lunch. I go back to the beach, take orders from guests and relay the information to the departments concerned, I spray fresh water on the guests, assist with sunglasses cleaning and all of the other Sun Beach offerings. My workday usually ends at 5 pm.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
I would love to be the Beach Manager. I am working very hard towards this goal.
What do you do in your free time?
I think downtime is important so you can get back to your job and give 100%. I like to clean my house, enjoy quality time with my family and watch football.
How do you manage your personal life based on your work schedule?
I try my best to find a balance. When I am on holiday, I make sure that I spend enough time with my family to make up for the time I haven't spent with them. I enjoy taking them shopping and for dinners when possible.
What does it take to be a good waiter? (Apart from being well groomed, friendly and having good people and communication skills).
A good waiter should always take care of their guests from start to finish and offer the best service so that the customer returns in the future. I think in a way, a good waiter is judged on his ability to make a guest return.
How do you handle an angry or dissatisfied guest?
I handle them by offering a service that will exceed their expectations. I do my best to hear and empathise with their situation and then make up for it in the best ways possible.
Working in the hospitality industry implies being in a good mood all the time, to what extent do you agree with this?
Yes indeed, we should always wear a smile on our faces and be as friendly and professional as possible—we cannot let personal problems overlap with our professional lives.
What about Sugar Beach motivates you to stay with them?
We really have an excellent management team. They always give me great feedback regarding my work and I always feel really appreciated by them. That makes a huge difference in the workplace.
What are some of your favorite things about Sugar Beach?
I think the hotel is really beautiful! The plantation-inspired design is totally unique and the tropical gardens are absolutely stunning. Not to mention the flawless beach which has prime seats at sunset - it’s a very special hotel with some of the finest and most unique Timeless Memories offerings on the island. It’s a great place to have an unforgettable holiday.
